Authentic materials and an architect with an open mind, it was enough to transform a 300-years-old Provençal house into a mansion, a soothing place where the future owner can come and relax.

They are often replaced by other concerns: connectivity, technology and flexibility. There are still places that remind us that it is possible to do things differently. Places that show that a quality architect has an almost palpable power when it comes to renovating and restoring, provided you use natural materials and enjoy textures and light.
In the Luberon, close to the village of Gordes and Roussillon stands still one of these buildings, 300 years old, next to Pierre Cardin's castle. The owners have made it an oasis of Zen by entrusting the restoration of this house to the famous Belgian architect Jo Lamberts.
The purity of the lines has been coupled with the simplicity of the design for a resolutely "less is more" spirit.
Everything here is handmade with noble and natural materials. The result is a rough house, a wild nothing but certainly luxurious and authentic.
If you ask a child to draw a house, his drawing will probably look like this Provençal hamlet house.
The sublimated functionality, when you enter the vast kitchen dining room, the atmosphere is not only welcoming and soothing. The stone floor has been completely restored. Ditto for walls that have returned to their original color. Three metal islands of identical dimensions are functional, the first is a storage space.
The central island is used for cooking. Finally, it is in the third island that sits the sink. In the center of the kitchen, a table a bench and six chairs signed Van Severen. Some porcelain vases are also carefully arranged.
In turn, the kitchen opens onto the living room, consisting of three armchairs with cushions and a table made of crates. In the back there is a storage area with a washing machine, a dryer and a refrigerator hidden behind a wooden partition recovered in a barn nearby. At the back of the house, two identical bathrooms built with a metal frame and clear glass.
The first floor hosts three nice size bedrooms whose floor, in authentic English teak gives warmth. From their windows, fields of lavender, the mountains with in the distance the villages of Joucas and Roussillon.
"Very few things in the house have been purchased as is," says Jo Lamberts. "With the exception of the kitchen chairs, all objects, furniture, structures and accessories have been handmade especially for the home. All copper faucets have found their definitive form here, on the spot. All curtains, seats and cushions were made with Belgian fabrics. "
Even the outdoor terrace with swimming pool, a must in Provence, is furnished with a table and chairs made by hand for which Austrian woods have been used. Around the garden a fence has been made of azure steel that can actually rust. "The intrinsic power of the material gives it more character through natural corrosion," adds the architect.
It is a real return to basics, it is increasingly difficult to find this type of good.
