The Hotel de Cheylus and the Jewish ritual baths: this mansion is linked to the jewish community of Pernes, very present in the 14th century. Their synagogue was destroyed in 1322 by order of Pope Jean XXII leading to the organisation of a ghetto in 1504 following the rise in anti jewish protests. The ghetto was on the outskirts of the present Place de la Juiverie and Bourg Merdeux. The jews were then expelled from Pernes and their property sold to local families. One of the mansions was bought by the D'Allemand family and then in 1590 by the De Cheylus.
The cellars of this property contain the only private jewish ritual bath known in the region to this day. This ritual bath (the 'cabussadou') dates from the 16th century and is made up of an L-shaped basin under a vault, fitted with eleven stone steps and with a depth of 2.25 metres. It is fed by a spring and, with an overflow system, is kept at 1.45 metres. This private pool was used by the women in the house every month and they got in up to their necks to purify themselves. A small basin, fed by a rain water tank, was added to the structure which is indispensable for Jewish ritual.
This private mansion is part of an estate that has been divided into 6 part, the mansion and 5 completely independent apartments.
The mansion has a private garden enclosed by stone walls, covering 450 sqm with a swimming pool to renovate.
It is set out on four floors, the ground floor, two upper floors and the arch ceilinged cellars with the Jewish Baths, listed as a historic monument.
Very beautiful features most of which have been remarkably well preserved, along with a spacious interior.
A rare opportunity.
