The Apt Market
The Apt Market has always been essential to the economy of the town and surrounding area. Closely linked to the seasons, tradition, and local customs, the market began to thrive as early as the 12th century and in 1504, letters patent of the Seneschal of Provence made it an institution on Saturdays. Local historical records illustrate the fundamental importance - both social and economical - of markets and fairs in Apt. These lively events attracted tradesmen and visitors from far and wide. Every Saturday morning, all year-round, the people of Apt and other villages of the Luberon rise early to go to the Market. The market is also extremely popular with estrangiés, ("foreigners" or "outsiders" in the local dialect) who come to soak up the colours and aromas of Provence.
In 1996, Apt's Market received the prestigious label "exceptional French market" for its lively atmosphere. The Farmer's Market
