Discover the Festival IN d'Avignon with its creative and contemporary artists, the Avignon Festival

We invite you to discover the Festival IN d'Avignon.

The Festival d'Avignon, founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, is today one of the most important international events for contemporary performing arts. Every year, in July, Avignon becomes a city-theater, transforming its architectural heritage into various performance venues, welcoming tens of thousands of theater lovers of all generations.Often on vacation and from far away, many spectators stay in Avignon for several days and see some of the shows among the forty works of theater, dance, and also visual arts or music. The Festival succeeds in the original alliance of a popular audience with international creation.

Avignon is also a spirit: the city is an open-air forum, where festival-goers talk about the shows and share their experiences as spectators. For a month, everyone can have access to a contemporary and living culture.

The Festival IN d'Avignon is composed of shows that have been chosen by the artistic direction. Since 2004, each edition has been created with the complicity of an associated artist to map out an artistic territory with him. Beyond its own creations, it is its questions, its practices, its enthusiasms that freely inspire the entire program.

The artistic program of the Festival IN d'Avignon in 2023 included the participation of artists such as Jean-Marie Aerts, Patricia Allio, Fanny Alvarez, Arthur Amard, Caroline Barneaud, Pauline Bayle, and Lazaro Benitez. This innovative edition brought together about forty theater, dance, and music shows, featuring contemporary artists.

The program thus developed is composed of about thirty artistic teams, whose work is possibly deployed in the time and space of the Festival, with one or more shows, but also readings, exhibitions, films, debates, which are so many entries into the universe of these artists. Every evening at the Festival, there are one or more "premieres," making Avignon a real place of creation and adventure for both artists and spectators.
